was the day before the event. Having
driven the cycle course and checked out Priory Lane (a steep hill right
after T1) it was time to test the water.
The sea was choppy and the swim was going to be tough if conditions
remained the same.Praying can work! The
day was clear and relatively still - a calm sea for the swim! Transition at 6:30 left plenty of time for
nerves to kick in before my wave start at 8:00. Having nearly forgotten my timing chip, it
was off to the briefing and swim start.
I managed to avoid most of the crowds in the swim but the out going
tide made direction a little difficult at times. The swim went well and I felt comfortable
as I came out of the water.T1 and onto the bike. Mounting the bike on an uphill slope and then
climbing away from the beach up Priory Lane went well. Within minutes the roads became good and the
cycle was on. The route is out and
back along dual carriage way. The
course is undulating but no really big hills.
For a non-drafting event I was surprised when a couple of groups
of 5-8 cyclists came past me. Obviously
thought they were in Kent!! The cycle
went well and I was pleased with my time.T2 on with the trainers. Just out of transition and the back of my
legs seized. Did the first couple
of Km in a reasonable time for me. But
after that it was a hard grind trying to run as much as possible. This is where I need to improve. It was also warm on the sea front and no water
was provided at the 5km turn. Crowds
were very supportive and the finish was very busy.Overall an enjoyable race
in good conditions. Guy Unger |
